“I Challenge you to be Effective Managers” – Ag. VC

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni, Ag. VC, UEW

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni has charged administrators of the University to be responsible and effective managers.

He warned UEW administrators to bear in mind that the success of the University mostly rests on their shoulders. He however, encouraged them to do away with any bitterness within and work collectively to attain the desired goal of the Institution.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni said this on Thursday 18th January, 2018 at the Opening Ceremony of the 2017 Annual Review Meeting for Members of the Registrar’s Offices held at Elmina Beach Resort from Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th January, 2018.

“Note that your role as administrators is critical. Indeed, I cannot imagine any successful tertiary institution functioning; I cannot imagine any administrative work, any academic work or any serious University life without the complex, integral and indispensable role of the Assistant Registrar, Senior Administrative Assistant, Deputy Registrar, Campus Registrar and the overall University Registrar.” He said.

He commended the Registrar and the organisers for the theme “University Governance in the 21st Century: What is expected of Registrars”. He expressed his happiness for them to have chosen no other theme but that particular theme.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor revealed that obviously, the work of the registrar of the 21st century would not be the same as the work of the registrar of the previous century. He pointed out that one of the essential things that universities ought to deal with currently was “the stiff competition”.

“For us as a UEW, it looks like everybody is interested in whatever we do. Every university in Ghana has or is aspiring aggressively to establish some Faculty of Education or Institute of Education. And it is very important that as a University calling ourselves the University of Education we work harder to conquer our competitors and tell the whole world that indeed our mission is education for service.” He said.

He indicated that UEW had lost potential students to some institutions such as the University of Development Studies (UDS) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) due to the stiff competition and their introduction of new Programmes in Education.

“How do we get the people to choose our University when at every corner someone is snatching them away from us? I am not flattering you; you know it that most of the policies, most of the innovative thinking, most of the amazing things that come from the university come from the memos that are written by you the administrators.

“Therefore, I want to encourage and urge each one of you to take this exercise very seriously. You are not coming here to reflect on how best you can move on but I hope that each is thinking of how they can contribute their quota.” The Acting Vice-Chancellor said.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni tasked the administrators to improve upon what they had done so that the University becomes the best across Ghana and beyond in terms of Teacher Education and Research.

The three-day event saw presentations from the Registrar, UEW, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq, former Registrar, UDS and President of Radford University College- Accra, Dr. Paul Effah and other pioneers of academy and industry.

Beginning the presentation was the Registrar, UEW, on “The Vision of the Registrar” this was followed by a presentation on the topic “Leading and Managing People” by the President, Radford University College-Accra, Dr. Paul Effah.

A Lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare spoke on “Conflict Resolution and Management” and “Using Emotional Intelligence to Improve Productivity” whereas the Managing Director of Bediako Memorial Institute (BMI), Mr. Kwadwo Asare Bediako took participants through “Target Setting and Performance Management” and “Succession Planning”.

The Ag. Director of Health Services, UEW, Dr. Beth Awuku-Offei climaxed the session with “The Health Implications of the Work of Administrators”.
