October, 2017 witnessed the first workshop for Staff and Service Personnel of
the Department of Media Relations of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW)
at the Finance Conference Room, North campus.
Head of Media
Relations, Ms. Eva Annan opined the purpose of the meeting. According to her,
the meeting was basically to discuss human resource issues in order to understand
the rudiments of administrative work at the university.

Relations Department of the Division of Human Resource, Mrs. Irene-Michelle
Ofosu-Behome presented on the topic “Channels of Communication in UEW. In her
presentation, she noted the various types of communication. She made
mention of Formal and Informal Communication as the two major forms of
communication. She added that oral, written, non-verbal just to mention but few
were other forms of communication.
She pointed out that
UEW as an institution was made up of academics, supporting staff and students adding, the channels of communication as arranged in descending order of
magnitude consist Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Registrar,
Deans/Directors, Heads of Departments and Unit/Section Heads.
Mrs. Ofosu-Behome
explained that information gets to the highest office only when it passes
through all the appropriate channels of communication. She therefore revealed
that, one does not get up and sends information to the highest office on the
basis of his or her friendship or cordial relationship with the person in
authority.
She ended her
presentation on Administrative and Supporting Staff. She said the Registrar was
the overall boss when it comes to administrative work in the university. She outlined
the channels of communication in administration and according to her, from ascending
order of magnitude they include; Staff, Unit Heads, Heads of Departments,
Divisional Heads, Deputy Registrar and the Registrar.
An Assistant Registrar of the Department of Junior and Senior Staff at the Division of
Human Resource, Mrs. Patricia Kaitoo also presented on the subject
“Punctuality/attendance at work. She advised all Staff and Service Personnel to
give more credence to punctuality in their activities.
“Every disciplined
society values punctuality. For instance, in our culture lateness is regarded
as disrespect whereas punctuality is regarded as obedience. Thus, I entreat
each one of you here to cultivate the habit of valuing punctuality.” She said.
She added that, being
punctual gives positive signal, strengthens relationship and reveals employee’s
integrity to the employer.

Head of Payroll at the Finance Office, Mr.
Appiah-Hayford talked about Payment of Overtime and Guest Artistes Allowances. He said quality
performance attracts motivation in the university adding that, the motivation was the overtime allowances added to the salary of hard working staff. He explained further that overtime allowances were earned through extra hours of work in the university adding, they were not applicable to service personnel.
Staff present were given the opportunity to ask questions and they offered due diligence to the
opportunity given them.

Appiah Kubi, Ms. Florence Okore-Hanson of Media Relations, Staff and Guest Artistes of Radio Windy Bay and National Service Personnel.
