The image of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW)
continues to soar as a lecturer and students win national and international awards
in their areas of expertise and research.

A Senior Lecturer, Dr. Mavis Amo-Mensah won the PR Academic
of the year at the Eight National PR and Communications Excellence Awards
organised by the Institute of Public Relations (IPR), Ghana and 2019
Outstanding Author Contribution award organised by Emerald Publishing.

A level 100 Communication and Media Studies student, Gideon Asumadu
Appiah-Agyei was adjudged the National Student Journalist of the year at the 2019
National Students Awards (NSA) organised by Network of Scholars in Africa while
the Students’ Representative Council Women’s Commissioner, Hawa Alidu bagged
two awards at the 5th Ghana Tertiary Women’s Awards 2020 organised
by RAD Communications in partnership with the Ministry of Communications, Ghana.
She won the Tertiary Woman Radio Host/Presenter of the year and Most Outstanding
Women’s Commissioner of the year awards.

On Thursday, 5th March, 2020, Dr. Mavis Amo-Mensah
and Gideon Appiah-Agyei officially presented their awards to the Management of
the University at the Council Chamber, North Campus, Winneba.
The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni was
pleased by the individual successes of these personalities in elevating the image
of the University.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang congratulated
the awardees for their excellent contributions towards the success of the UEW.
The Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq. was overwhelmed by
the achievement of the first year student and encouraged him to focus on winning
more laurels for himself and the University as a whole. Surv. Osei-Barima Esq. was
also proud of lecturers at the Department of Communication and Media Studies
for the support and assistance offered the first year student to win an award
for the University.
The Head, Department of Communication and Media Studies, Mr.
Kwesi Aggrey recounted the exploits of the Department since its establishment. He
thanked Management for the tremendous support to the Department.
Profile of the Awardees
Dr. Mavis
Amo-Mensah
Mavis Amo-Mensah is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of
Communication and Media Studies, University of Education, Winneba. She has a
PhD in Public Relations and Communication from Leeds Business School, Leeds
Beckett University, UK. She holds an MPhil in Communication and Media Studies
and a Bachelor of Education degree in English, both from the University of
Education, Winneba. She also has a Post-Graduate
Diploma in Public Relations from the Chartered
Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), UK. She joined the Institute of
Public Relations Ghana in 2007 and she is currently an Accredited
member (APR) of the Institute.
At the University of Education,
Winneba, she is also the Director, Office for Institutional Advancement
(OIA) and the Vice-President of the University Teachers’ Association of Ghana
(UEW-Chapter).
Mavis Amo-Mensah, PhD is
responsible for Public Relations at the Department of Communication and Media
Studies, UEW and teaches three courses in Public Relations: Introduction to
Public Relations, Advanced Public Relations and Social Campaign Planning and
Management.
She
is currently a member of the Interim Management Team, Communication Educators
Association of Ghana (GEAG) and chaired the Publicity Committee for the
launch/first national conference of the association in June 2019.
Hawa Alidu
Hawa Alidu is a level 300 undergraduate student in the
University of Education, Winneba, studying Art Education.
She had her high school education at Accra Senior High School
after having graduated from faithful Star Academy at Accra Ablekuma.
She is the Students’ Representative Council/National Union of
Ghana Students women’s commissioner for the University of Education Winneba and
currently the Verna Miss Peace Ambassador 2019, having served as a course representative
for two departmental courses in the university and a protocol prefect in the Senior
High School. During her tenure as a prefect in senior high, she gained some
experiences and built up her leadership skills and confidence.
She is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Lead Youth
Empowerment Network (LEYEN) a Non-Governmental Organisation with the mission of
inspiring hope in lives through humanitarian activities and transformational
impacts. As part of the mission to inspire hope in lives, she has initiated the
“She Essence Awards” scheme which seeks to acknowledge and honor hard working and
deserving women in the tertiary institutions.
She is also the host for a campus base programme “Anything
Everything” on Radio Windy Bay 98.3 MHz at the University of Education,
Winneba. She is a gender advocate and a strong Sustainable Development Goals
(SDG) lover.
Gideon Asumadu Appiah- Agyei
Gideon
Asumadu Appiah- Agyei is a Level 100 undergraduate student with the Department
of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Education, Winneba,
studying Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Studies.
He
had his high school education at Amaniampong Senior High School after having
graduated from Unity M/A Junior High School, all in the Mampong-Ashanti
Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
He
gained some level of experience and built up his confidence and leadership
skills having served as the President for the Writers, Drama and Debaters’ Club
during his days in high school.
He
is currently a student Broadcast Journalist with Radio Windy Bay at Winneba and
DM- TV Official, a YouTube video channel, Head of Programmes for Bridgasu
Foundation and Paradise Image Educational Consultancy (PIE Consultancy), a
passionate Photographer, Cinematographer, an Editor, a Debate coach and Public
Speaking trainer.
With
a clear sense of urgency and tenacity of purpose, he is motivated to serve and
respect all manner of persons he comes across in his journey of life. He is a
great team player, workaholic, open to all and has a great can do spirit.
His
mission in life is to contribute his quota towards any project which seeks to
enhance human and environmental development.
