Focus on improving MIS for students’ comfort – Dr. Ofori-Birikorang urges Registrar

Dr. Andrews Ofori-Birikorang

The acting Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Communication, Dr. Andrews Ofori-Birikorang, has urged the Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei Barima Esq to focus on improving the Management Information System (MIS) of Administrators, Academic Heads and Students for easy accessibility of academic information and records.

He said that every position contained assets and liabilities; adding that one of the key areas for the Registrar to work on was the MIS. He however challenged the Registrar to leave a good legacy concerning the MIS.

Dr. Ofori-Birikorang said this at the South Campus of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) when the Registrar paid a working visit to the Dean and Heads of Departments of the Faculty.

The Acting Dean appealed to the Registrar to ensure that there would be an efficient, highly running and effective MIS should he leave office anytime. He said “students do not have to come here before they can register. Students should be able to stay at the comfort of their homes and make arrangement for accommodation as it happens in other institutions across the world.”

He stated emphatically that the University would have no problems if students were comfortable in learning and satisfied with the academic environment. He therefore urged the Registrar to take a critical look at solving and improving the MIS.

Dr. Ofori-Birikorang hinted that the bureaucratic system of the institution also hampers the effective growth of a Faculty and the University as a whole.

“You talked about institutional patriotism which to me you meant showing loyalty to this University. We are obliged to do so but I think it is a two way affair. If the system does not treat you fairly, there is no way you will be patriotic. So, I will plead with you to ensure that staff benefit from their hard work and loyalty towards the institution.” He addressed the Registrar.

He then pledged to support the Registrar in all means to ensure there was unity among themselves. “We pledge our support for you and we will ensure that every Faculty works hand in hand. I assure you that we will give you the same support we gave to your predecessors.” He promised.

The Acting Head of Department for English Education, Dr. Peace Israel also said that students’ welfare should be the ultimate priority of the University. She complained that most of the students at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Communication had not received their ID Cards and Hand Books.

“Students are not happy about that. Some have even been in the institution for three years and yet do not have their ID Cards. As a result, most find it difficult to come back for their post graduate degrees.” She opined.

Acting Head of the Department for Communication and Media Studies Education (CMS), Ms. Joyce Mensah asked the Registrar to address the issue of initiating undergraduate programmes in CMS. She said several proposals had been sent to the Registry since 2007 about the initiation of undergraduate programmes in CMS but to no avail.

“The Department is developing and to foster that development, I think that one of the key things we need to do is to push the undergraduate programmes. Again, we are considering introducing a PhD programme as well. I believe all these ambitions will be a reality should you support and push the agenda. We desperately call on you to assist us achieve our dreams.” She said to the Registrar.

In his response, the Registrar vowed to ensure that every issue would be addressed as and when it was necessary.

Present at the gathering were the Deputy Registrar of the Division of Publications and Communication, Mr. Steve v. Kamassah, acting Head of Department for Applied Linguistics, Dr. Charlotte Fofo Lomotey and the Faculty Officer, Mr. Collins Owusu-Ansah.

He revealed that the launch was basically to inform the media about the upcoming Masquerade Festival Competition and officially invite them as well. He said management was planning to make the event a week-long occasion, not a day's as it used to be.

Desist from 'Soli' – an Experienced Journalist Warns

Mrs. Gifty Appiah-Adjei

A former journalist and lecturer at the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Mrs. Gifty Appiah-Adjei has warned UEW reporters to refrain from gifts that may influence their reportage.

She said there was nothing wrong in accepting gifts (soli) or an envelope from event organisers but the question to ask oneself was the motive behind it.

Mrs. Appiah-Adjei said this at Nathaniel Pecku Building Conference Room on Friday 10th November, 2017 during the last Quarterly Workshop for Staff, Guest Artistes and National Service Personnel of the Department of Media Relations.

She pointed out that reporters must always present facts just as they have observed at the event. She however, stressed that objectivity would be at stake so long as some reporters accept envelopes from event organisers.

“You can never be independent if you accept soli. Soli is meant to influence your work therefore, once you accept it, your story is compromised. I know Journalists in Ghana are not well paid but let’s avoid soli for the purpose of integrity.” She said.

Mrs. Appiah-Adjei hinted that envelopes given to reporters were meant to induce their commitments towards a particular coverage. “I am speaking from experience; when you attend a programme and receive an envelope with a huge sum of money, you realise it boosts your morale and you are committed to do your best. But you show no commitment when the amount is small.” She opined.

She said the media, as the Fourth Estate of the Realm was not just a privilege but a responsibility of journalists to ensure that people receive the exact information always.

“Sensationalising stories would do you no good but would rather taint your credibility. Let’s endeavour to give a vivid account of events and make an intelligent guess of attendance as well. For instance, if a reporter should state that about 100,000 people were present at a rally at the UEW Sports College field, obviously that would be a lie since that field could not contain such number of people.” She said.

Mrs. Appiah-Adjei advised UEW reporters to be wise when guessing attendance of events such as campaigns, rallies, tours and other social gatherings.

She noted that the essentials of news writing were: accuracy, balance, credibility and objectivity. She therefore, appealed to UEW media practitioners to uphold those values in their write ups.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afuul-Broni, Acting Vice-Chacellor, UEW

Speaking on the topic “Pursuing Excellence: Effective Management of Units”, acting Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni said excellence was the quality of being outstanding; adding that, to pursue excellence one had to step outside the comfort zone and work with the spirit of endeavour. He stated that management was coordinating the inputs of the various human resources to accomplish institutional goals.

“I think it is pathetic when generally we think that management is Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and Finance Officer; hardly do we even include the University Librarian, Internal Auditor or Director of Development and this behaviour is displayed in the way we do everything including the way we minute on documents. Management is all of us. Management is you and I. Let’s work in partnership with our common vision so people will know what we are doing.” He said.

Dean of School of Graduate Studies, Professor George Kankam presented on the topic, “Academic Leadership at the Faculties”.  He said leadership was the ability to establish a clear vision, share that vision with others so they would follow willingly, provide information, knowledge and methods to realise that vision.

Deputy Finance Officer, Mr. Frank Owusu Boateng took members through “Financial Management at the Units” this was followed by a presentation on the topic “Collaborative Leadership: The Role of the administrator” by the Deputy Registrar of IERIS, Mr. William Agyei-Bieni.

The former Dean for the School of Creative Arts, Professor Mary Dzansi McPalm started the presentation for the second day on the topic “Staff Professional Development (SPD)”. She spoke on issues concerning promotions at the university saying that the rationale for SPD included Staff Development and Improved Research and Publications. She added that there was the need for SPD to help improve the UEW workforce towards the realisation of its vision and mission and also assist staff to pursue career advancement through developing interpersonal, supervising and managerial skills.

Director of Quality Assurance Directorate, Professor Yaw Ameyaw in his presentation on the topic “Staying Globally Competitive – How can UEW Stay and Survive” revealed that UEW has been collaborating with 40 institutions but was not receiving any benefit from those collaborations. He therefore advised that the university should put more value on skills than a degree or certificate.

Presenting on “The Role of a Departmental Head at UEW”, Dean of Faculty of Science Education, Professor Samuel Asiedu-Addo outlined various responsibilities of a Departmental Head. He said Departmental Heads must organise teaching programmes to maintain acceptable standards of teaching and ensure that facilities were available in their respective disciplines. He added that the academic leader must promote excellent teaching and learning, counsel and mentor students and adhere to the general regulations of the university as well.

Mr. Raymond Bentum Boison of the Division of Academic Affairs made the final presentation on the topic “OSIS: Prospects, Challenges and the Way Forward”.

Participants had the privilege to ask questions and make contributions to each presentation and their questions were addressed by the facilitators.
