UEW gains international recognition for Teacher Education and Research

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has passionately forged ahead in its quest to become an internationally reputable Institution for Teacher Education and Research through strengthening of its Regional and International collaborations.

As a result, the Faculty of Educational Studies at UEW in collaboration with the International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD) held the 12th ISSBD Africa workshop at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre from Monday, 30th October to Thursday, 2nd November, 2017. The workshop was on the theme “Researching into Adaptive Behaviours in Contexts of Change: Interdisciplinary and Multicultural Approaches for Early Career Scholars in Africa”.

Over 65 scholars and delegates travelled from the United States of America, Norway and some parts of Africa to witness the workshop. Also, many postgraduate students and academic staff of UEW participated in the workshop as well.

One of the main objectives of the workshop was to help in boosting membership of the society and the official inauguration of ISSBD Ghana Chapter.

The University also continues to build research partnership in order to expand collaborations with other institutions and organisations. In this vein, the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages Education received research grant from the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) to conduct Language Mapping Exercise for some selected Districts in the country.

The Faculty completed the Pilot study at Yendi District in November 2016. It also undertook the first and second phases of the project in January 2017 and March 2017 respectively. The first phase involved 59 districts whilst the second phase covered 49 districts.

Again, the Department of French Education participated in the inter-university conference on Doctoral Studies held at the University of Ghana from 23rd to 24th March, 2017.

Also, some members of staff at the Department of Ga-Dangme Education participated in a four-day Consultative Workshop for the development of Reading Materials for Kindergarten Children in Accra. The Workshop was organised by the Curriculum Research and Development Division (CRDD) of the Ministry of Education in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

The Department of History Education has fostered relationships with various universities across the globe and one of the exchanges has been with the Free University of Berlin in Germany. In August 2017, two professors of the foreign University secured funding for ten UEW History Education students to travel to Berlin.

As part of the agreement, ten Free University of Berlin students would also visit UEW early next year. Students from each university would be paired to work together on a research topic that would be examined through German and Ghanaian perspectives.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invited the Head of Department, History Education to Trondheim, Norway to participate in a workshop to foster co-operation between NTNU and Ghanaian Universities.
