The acting Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and
Communication, Dr. Andrews Ofori-Birikorang, has urged the Registrar, Surv.
Paul Osei Barima Esq to focus on improving the Management Information System
(MIS) of Administrators, Academic Heads and Students for easy accessibility of academic
information and records.
He said that every position contained assets and liabilities;
adding that one of the key areas for the Registrar to work on was the MIS. He
however challenged the Registrar to leave a good legacy concerning the MIS.
Dr. Ofori-Birikorang said this at the South Campus of the
University of Education, Winneba (UEW) when the Registrar paid a working visit
to the Dean and Heads of Departments of the Faculty.
The Acting Dean appealed to the Registrar to ensure that
there would be an efficient, highly running and effective MIS should he leave
office anytime. He said “students do not have to come here before they can register.
Students should be able to stay at the comfort of their homes and make
arrangement for accommodation as it happens in other institutions across the
world.”
He stated emphatically that the University would have no
problems if students were comfortable in learning and satisfied with the
academic environment. He therefore urged the Registrar to take a critical look
at solving and improving the MIS.
Dr. Ofori-Birikorang hinted that the bureaucratic system of
the institution also hampers the effective growth of a Faculty and the University
as a whole.
“You talked about institutional patriotism which to me you
meant showing loyalty to this University. We are obliged to do so but I think
it is a two way affair. If the system does not treat you fairly, there is no
way you will be patriotic. So, I will plead with you to ensure that staff
benefit from their hard work and loyalty towards the institution.” He addressed
the Registrar.
He then pledged to support the Registrar in all means to
ensure there was unity among themselves. “We pledge our support for you and we
will ensure that every Faculty works hand in hand. I assure you that we will give
you the same support we gave to your predecessors.” He promised.
The Acting Head of Department for English Education, Dr.
Peace Israel also said that students’ welfare should be the ultimate priority
of the University. She complained that most of the students at the Faculty of
Foreign Languages and Communication had not received their ID Cards and Hand
Books.
“Students are not happy about that. Some have even been in
the institution for three years and yet do not have their ID Cards. As a
result, most find it difficult to come back for their post graduate degrees.”
She opined.
Acting Head of the Department for Communication and Media
Studies Education (CMS), Ms. Joyce Mensah asked the Registrar to address the
issue of initiating undergraduate programmes in CMS. She said several proposals
had been sent to the Registry since 2007 about the initiation of undergraduate
programmes in CMS but to no avail.
“The Department is developing and to foster that development,
I think that one of the key things we need to do is to push the undergraduate
programmes. Again, we are considering introducing a PhD programme as well. I
believe all these ambitions will be a reality should you support and push the
agenda. We desperately call on you to assist us achieve our dreams.” She said
to the Registrar.
In his response, the Registrar vowed to ensure that every
issue would be addressed as and when it was necessary.
Present at the gathering were the Deputy Registrar of the
Division of Publications and Communication, Mr. Steve v. Kamassah, acting Head
of Department for Applied Linguistics, Dr. Charlotte Fofo Lomotey and the
Faculty Officer, Mr. Collins Owusu-Ansah.
